Star King (RSD21) was released by Demon Records as a special Record Store Day 2021 vinyl compilation devoted to rare, alternative and previously unavailable recordings from the T. Rex archive.

The collection brings together working versions, demos, rough mixes and alternate masters spanning different periods of Marc Bolan’s career. Rather than focusing on familiar hit recordings, the album offers a glimpse into the creative process behind a number of well-known songs, revealing their development from early ideas and studio experiments through to completed recordings.

Issued as part of the Record Store Day programme, the release presents a selection of archive material highlighting Bolan’s songwriting, arranging and recording methods. The compilation includes alternate versions of recognised favourites alongside lesser-known recordings from the T. Rex catalogue

The compilation assembles working versions, demos, rough mixes, alternate masters and studio recordings drawn from various sessions across Marc Bolan’s career.

STYLE & THEMES

The recordings showcase the developmental stages of T. Rex material, ranging from demos and jam sessions to rough mixes and alternative masters.

Several tracks demonstrate the evolution of songs that would later become key releases, while others provide insight into Bolan's work-in-progress approach to songwriting and studio experimentation.

The collection highlights the raw creative process behind some of T. Rex's best-known recordings and reflects Bolan's continued willingness to revisit and reshape material during production.
