T. Rex (September 10,1971) – "Jeepster" b/w "Life’s a Gas" Format: UK
Updated: Oct 5
Issued as a limited‑edition promotional single, this early 7" pressing of Jeepster marked the first UK appearance of the track on vinyl. Released on 10 September 1971, the promo was circulated exclusively to radio and industry contacts to build anticipation for the forthcoming Electric Warrior album. The pairing of Jeepster with Life’s a Gas showcased Marc Bolan’s transition from acoustic mysticism into the confident electric glam sound that defined T. Rex’s rise.
Both tracks were produced by Tony Visconti. Jeepster reflects Bolan’s blues‑driven groove and swagger, recorded during the Electric Warrior sessions. Life’s a Gas presents one of Bolan’s most tender acoustic compositions, offering a contrasting emotional tone within the promo pairing.
STYLE & THEMES
Jeepster blends rock ’n’ roll simplicity with Bolan’s glam‑era charisma, driven by a playful riff and rhythmic confidence. Life’s a Gas delivers a gentle, reflective acoustic mood, highlighting Bolan’s lyrical romanticism.
TRACK‑BY‑TRACK NOTES
• Jeepster — A swaggering glam‑rock track from the Electric Warrior sessions, issued here in its first UK promo appearance.
• Life’s a Gas — A soft, acoustic composition that balances the A‑side’s electric energy.
