This rare single-sided EMIDISC acetate preserves an early pre-Tyrannosaurus Rex recording of Hippy Gumbo, one of the most important songs from Marc Bolan's 1966 recording sessions with producer Simon Napier Bell.

The acetate is particularly notable because it features an original hand-drawn doodle by Marc Bolan on the label itself, transforming the disc from a simple studio reference recording into a unique piece of Bolan memorabilia. The surviving artwork makes this one of the most distinctive EMIDISC acetates known from Bolan's early career.

RECORDING

Hippy Gumbo was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, Kingsway, London.

Production was handled by Simon Napier Bell.

The surviving disc exists as a single-sided EMIDISC acetate dating from November 1966.

The label features a flower-like doodle drawn by Marc Bolan together with handwritten artist and title details.

STYLE & THEMES

Hippy Gumbo captures Bolan's growing fascination with surreal imagery, whimsical storytelling and eccentric lyrical ideas.

The song represents an important step in the development of the imaginative songwriting style that would later flourish during the Tyrannosaurus Rex years.

In the late autumn of 1966, a young Marc Bolan released his third and final solo single before forming Tyrannosaurus Rex. “Hippy Gumbo” was a quirky, upbeat pop track with a strong beat-group feel and a touch of the whimsical, poetic style that would soon define his work with Tyrannosaurus Rex. Backed with “Misfit,” this Parlophone 7" single marked the end of Bolan’s early solo period and the beginning of his journey into the acoustic folk-rock sound that would lead to glam stardom.

Released on November 25, 1966, Hippy Gumbo was Marc Bolan's first single for Parlophone Records following his earlier Decca releases. Issued during the transitional period before the formation of Tyrannosaurus Rex, the single captured Bolan moving towards the more whimsical and imaginative songwriting style that would become a hallmark of his later work.

Written by Bolan and produced by Simon Napier Bell, the release paired the upbeat and quirky "Hippy Gumbo" with the reflective B-side "Misfit". Although the record did not achieve commercial chart success, it remains one of the most important recordings from Bolan's pre-Tyrannosaurus Rex years.

RECORDING

The single was produced by Simon Napier Bell.

"Hippy Gumbo" was recorded alongside thirteen additional songs during sessions held at De Lane Lea Studios, Kingsway, London, sometime during September and October 1966.

The companion recordings from these sessions were:

• The Perfumed Garden Of Gulliver Smith

• Pictures Of Purple People

• Charlie

• I'm Weird

• Mustang Ford

• Horrible Breath

• Hot Rod Mama

• Jasmine 49

• Eastern Spell

• Black And White Incident

• You Got The Power

• Observations

• Cat Black

STYLE & THEMES

"Hippy Gumbo" demonstrates Bolan's fascination with surreal imagery, eccentric characters and playful wordplay. The recording points towards the whimsical songwriting approach that would flourish during the Tyrannosaurus Rex years.

"Misfit" presents a more introspective counterpart, highlighting Bolan's ability to combine unusual lyrical ideas with memorable melodies.

Together the recordings reveal an artist rapidly developing an individual style distinct from the British pop and beat music scene of the period.

TRACK-BY-TRACK NOTES

SIDE ONE

• Hippy Gumbo – One of Bolan's best-known pre-Tyrannosaurus Rex recordings and an early example of the fantastical lyrical style that would later define much of his work.

SIDE TWO

• Misfit – A contrasting B-side that presents a more reflective and personal side of Bolan's songwriting.
