THE STORY

The band performed “Get It On” with the newly expanded lineup, joined by former King Crimson member Ian McDonald on saxophone. This was one of the key TV appearances promoting the single that would become T. Rex’s second UK No. 1 hit.

CONTEXT AND NOTES

This Top of the Pops appearance came right at the start of T. Rex’s explosive breakthrough year. “Get It On” (released July 2, 1971) quickly climbed the charts. Like many original BBC recordings from the era, the master tape was later wiped, but a German broadcast on Disco 71 preserved the performance
